TRADES · RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICAL

Every missed call became a captured lead. $342k a year stopped walking out the door.

An owner-operator sparky was losing 22 quotes a month to voicemail. A two-line auto-responder and a pre-qualification form changed the entire business.

BACKGROUND

A seven-year residential sparky with no shortage of demand. Losing it the moment his phone rang on a ladder.

The owner has run this residential electrical business out of Palm Beach since 2019. Residential work, mostly word-of-mouth and Google Maps, growing steadily off reputation alone. By 2025 he was running with one apprentice and a calendar that was already too full.

The problem wasn't getting work. It was getting caught. The sparky was on jobs from 7am, hands-busy. Every day he'd surface to a voicemail box full of "hi mate, just looking for a quote". By the time he called back at 6pm, half had already rung the next sparky on the list.

When we mapped his actual call log over two weeks, the number was confronting: 3 to 5 missed calls per day, 60-70% of them never returning. The pipeline wasn't broken. It was bleeding out at the front door.

WHAT WE FOUND

Three gaps that compounded. Every missed call multiplied the leakage.

GAP 1
No intake when the phone went unanswered
Voicemail caught messages, but voicemail-to-callback assumed the caller would stay engaged. Most didn't. They hung up and called the next number. No alternative path captured them in the meantime.
GAP 2
Slow quote turnaround on the ones who did stick
For callers who did persist, quoting was a 2-3 day affair. He'd call back that evening, ask questions, drive past the site, then write the quote. Faster competitors won jobs he never knew he was bidding on.
GAP 3
No data to know what was being lost
Because missed calls vanished into voicemail and never closed the loop, he genuinely didn't know how many leads he was losing per week. The problem was invisible until we ran the numbers.
WHAT WE DID

Capture the call the second it rang out. Qualify the job before he stepped off the ladder.

We didn't try to fix his calendar or get him answering more calls. He's a sparky. He's on tools, not a phone. The job was to capture leads when his hands were full and feed him pre-qualified jobs he could quote in the evening, fast.

FROM THE OWNER

From the owner.

Every missed call used to be money walking out the door. I knew it, I just didn't know how to stop it without hiring someone to answer the phone. The SMS form does the job for me. People fill it out, I see it at smoko, I quote them that night. We're booking more work than ever and I'm still on the tools.
